In what is essentially two short, complementary plays, Friel explores the complexities of love and relationships. In the first, two teenagers sit atop a hill, preparing for their final school exams. The girl is pregnant and they are soon to be married. In the second play, Friel portrays an older couple reflecting on their long-term relationship and the compromises that have come with it.
Lovers: Winners & Losers premiered at the Gate Theatre in 1967 and was most recently performed at Irish Rep in 2018 alongside The Yalta Game, directed by Conor Bagley.
As part of The Friel Project, the Irish Repertory Theatre is delighted to present readings of Brian Friel’s plays. Together with the Mainstage productions, this series represents a retrospective on the work of Brian Friel.
