Friel’s 1988 play, which had its American Premiere at Irish Rep in 1991, examines the life of Hugh O’Neill, the 16th Century Earl of Tyrone. O’Neill led an Irish and Spanish alliance against the English in an attempt to drive them out of Ireland; his historic flight to Rome after being defeated at the battle of Kinsale cleared the way for the plantation of Ulster.
Making History was first produced by Field Day Theater Company in Derry.
As part of The Friel Project, the Irish Repertory Theatre is delighted to present readings of Brian Friel’s plays. Together with the Mainstage productions, this series represents a retrospective on the work of Brian Friel.
