WHAT TO READ:
LA Times recently interviewed Jon M. Chu, director of the movie musical ‘In the Heights,‘ who cited George M. Cohan as his inspiration (spot the similarity in their names?) and refers to a famous moment from ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’ that inspired a scene for ‘In the Heights!’
From 1901 through 1940, George M. Cohan produced 80 Broadway shows, many of which he wrote himself. This brilliant book by John McCabe brings you through the adventurous and astonishing life and career of The Man Who Owned Broadway.
George M! was a 1968 Broadway musical about the life of song-and-dance man, George M. Cohan. Watch the full adaption below with Bernadette Peters, or check out Joel Grey’s 1974 Tony Award performance here!
‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ was the first movie-musical about the life of George M. Cohan, which he got to see himself in the final few weeks of his battle with cancer. Watch Academy Award-winner James Cagney sing “Give My Regards To Broadway” below!
WHAT TO LISTEN TO:
Listen to the only known recording of Cohan, in 1936, singing his hit “Over There” live. “Over There” became the rallying cry for the overseas troops, and the public, during World War I.
This podcast explores the history and origins of the Broadway Musical. David Armstrong’s first episode focuses on “George M. Cohan & The Immigrants That Invented Broadway.”
WHAT TO EAT & DRINK:
There’s nothing quite like an apple pie to celebrate the 4th of July – so bust out the stars-and-stripes to celebrate Cohan’s legacy and try this twist on a classic recipe by Jerelle Guy for a Salted Irish Cream Apple Crostata!
Why not start where it all began? Broadway, the longest street in the world, runs through Manhattan for 150 miles. This easy and delicious Manhattan cocktail is the perfect drink to give your regards to Broadway!
