Mrs. Warren’s Profession
Laura Odeh & Dana Ivey in Mrs. Warren's Profession

Mrs. Warren’s Profession

by George Bernard Shaw
directed by Charlotte Moore

December 9- February 19, 2006

  • Obie Award, “Best Actress” – Dana Ivey
  • Lucille Lortel Nom., “Best Revival”
  • Drama League Nom. – Dana Ivey

At the turn of the century, Vivie Warren, a Cambridge educated and well brought-up young woman learns that her mother has risen from abject poverty to enormous wealth through her investments in brothels throughout Europe. While Miss Warren acknowledges her mother’s courage and respects her overcoming her past, she fails to agree with her mother’s continuing in her line of work.

Mrs. Warren’s Profession was written in 1894, but it’s “scandalous” content prevented it form being produced until 1902. the play’s American debut was closed and banned after only one performance, and its sold-out Broadway debut was marked by the cast being cited for disorderly conduct. And while no arrests are expected during this production, Shaw’s timeless wit is on grand display in this delightful comedy.

“Whenever Ivey is on stage, the play immediately becomes much more involving. Granted, Mrs. Warren is by far the most interesting character. But Ivey, who earned a Tony nomination last season for her scene-stealing turn in The Rivals, makes Kitty multifaceted and ultimately sympathetic.” -Broadway.com
